The six questions our customer care line is asked most often. If yours is not here, the 17 guides below take each task step by step.

How do I update a case after I delete an entry of that case?

Deleting a single entry removes one hearing line only — the case itself stays in your diary, along with its unique id and the rest of its history. To carry the matter forward:

  1. Find the case — either by its date from the calendar, or through Search Case.
  2. Touch and hold any remaining entry of that case.
  3. Select Update Case from the dialog that pops up.
  4. Set the Next Date, change the stage or any other detail, and press Update.

The matter reappears in your cause list on the new date you set. Only Delete Entire Case removes a matter altogether.

What if I do not update my profile? Will this cause any problem for my app?

Your diary keeps working exactly as it does now. Case entries, the calendar, search and next-date reminders all run on the device itself and never depend on your profile.

What does depend on it is your e-mail id. It is the address the third copy of every backup is sent to, and the address we use to help you get your keys back if you ever forget them. An old or mistyped address means those mails go nowhere.

It takes under a minute to fix — see How to keep my user profile up to date.

I don’t see my backup file after I clicked on the backup button. Where do I find it?

Nothing has gone wrong — one tap on Create Backup writes three copies, and they do not all sit in the same place:

  1. Phone memory. The first copy is saved to your handset’s internal memory. Open your file manager and look there first.
  2. SD card or secondary storage. The second copy goes to secondary storage. Where that physically lands differs by manufacturer — some handsets treat part of internal memory as “secondary”, others use the removable SD card.
  3. E-mail. The third copy is mailed to the address in your profile, but only when the file is under 25 MB and the phone had an internet connection at the moment of backup. Check your spam folder too.

If the e-mail copy never arrived, you were most likely offline when you pressed the button. Connect to the internet and run the backup once more.

If I fill the prev. date column, will it create an entry in back date for this prev. date?

No. The previous-date column is a reference field on the entry you are saving right now. It records what the last hearing date was, so that the history of the matter reads correctly when you open it later.

It does not create a back-dated entry, and the case will not turn up in the cause list when you pick that earlier date on the calendar.

If you actually want the matter to show on an earlier date, save the case with that date as its hearing date instead.

What is this id column in the Lawyer’s Diary diary?

Every case is given a unique id the moment it is registered in the app. Think of it as the matter’s short number — one value, easy to read out over the phone.

Give that id to your client. When the client rings, choose the search by id filter, type the id, and the matter comes up at once — no case number to spell out, no party name to remember.

The id stays with the case for its whole life. Updating the stage, changing the court or setting a new next date never changes it. See How to search a case.

Do previous cases exist after I restore my cases from a backup file?

No — a restore replaces, it does not merge. The app clears the data currently on the device and rebuilds the database from the backup file you picked.

That means anything you added after that backup was taken will not be there once the restore finishes. It is exactly why the app makes you type your e-mail id to confirm: it is a deliberate speed bump on an operation you cannot undo.

Always take a fresh backup before restoring an old one. Restore is for a new phone, or for data you have genuinely lost — not for day-to-day use. See How to restore data from a backup file.

Each one is the real sequence of taps, written out. Everything below happens inside the Android app — nothing needs a signal except the e-mail copy of your backup.

Cases

Cases 01

How to add a new case

Enter a matter once. From then on every hearing is an update, not a fresh copy — the point of leaving the paper register behind.

  1. Open Lawyer’s Diary, open the menu and select Add New Case.
  2. Fill out the details of the case — case number, parties, court, type of case, stage and the hearing date. Court, type and stage are picked from your own dropdown lists, so set those up first if the entry you need is missing (see Customise).
  3. Press Save. That is all — the case is stored on your Android device and is given its own unique id.

Because the diary lives on the device, the case you just saved is readable inside court with no signal.

Cases 02

How to update a case after adding it to the diary

The everyday action: the bench gives a date, you record it before you leave the room.

  1. Find the case — pick its date from the calendar, or use Search Case.
  2. Touch and hold the case entry you want to update.
  3. The options dialog pops up. Select Update Case.
  4. Select the Next Date, change the stage or any other detail if required, and hit Update.

The matter moves forward to the new date and the earlier entry stays behind as history. No copying out, no rewriting.

Cases 03

How to view all cases for a date

Your cause list for any day, past or future, without turning a page.

  1. Tap the Lawyer’s Diary icon to open the app.
  2. At the top of the homepage there is a small calendar icon.
  3. Tap it and select the date. Lawyer’s Diary lists every case set down for that day, right away.

Check tomorrow’s board the evening before — it is the fastest way to know what you are walking into.

Cases 04

How to view the details of any case

The full record behind a one-line entry — useful when a client calls and you have four seconds to sound prepared.

  1. Get to the entry, either from its date or through Search Case.
  2. Touch and hold the entry to bring up the options dialog.
  3. Choose the option to show the details of the case.
  4. Read the whole record — parties, court, type of case, stage, previous date, next date, your notes and the case id.
Cases 05

How to delete a single case entry

Made a wrong entry? Take that one line out without disturbing the rest of the matter.

  1. Touch and hold the case entry you want to delete. A dialog box pops up asking what you want to do.
  2. Select Delete Case Entry.
  3. Fill in the confirmation text and press Delete Anyway.
  4. Update the other entries of that case if the dates need correcting — see How to update a case.

Only the single entry is removed. The case, its id and its remaining history all stay.

Cases 06

How to delete an entire case

Matter disposed of, or registered by mistake? Clear it out of the diary in seconds.

  1. Touch and hold any entry of the case. The dialog box pops up.
  2. Select Delete Entire Case.
  3. Fill in the confirmation text and press Delete Anyway.

This wipes the matter and every one of its entries, and it cannot be undone. Run a backup first if there is any chance you will want the record later.

Customise your dropdown lists

6 guides

Courts, types of case and stages are your lists. Set them to match the practice you actually run, and adding a case becomes three taps instead of three sentences of typing. Every list below is edited the same way, from Settings, and every change shows up the next time you add or update a case.

Customise 09

How to add a new court to the dropdown list

  1. Go to the Settings menu and select Add Court.
  2. Enter the court name as you want it to read in your diary and save it.
  3. The name now appears in the court name dropdown whenever you add a new case or update an existing one.
Customise 10

How to add a new case type to the dropdown list

  1. Go to the Settings menu and select Add Case Type.
  2. Enter the type of case — civil suit, writ, arbitration, accident claim, whatever your practice uses — and save it.
  3. Your customised type of case list is offered every time you add a new case or update one later.
Customise 11

How to add a new stage to the dropdown list

  1. Go to the Settings menu and select Add Stage.
  2. Enter the stage — admission, framing, evidence, arguments, and so on — and save it.
  3. The customised stages list is shown when you add a new case or update any case later.

Stages are what make advanced search worth using, so it is worth getting this list right early.

Customise 12

How to remove a court name from the dropdown list

  1. Go to the Settings menu and select Remove Court.
  2. Select the court name you no longer need.
  3. Press the remove button. It disappears from the dropdown you see when adding or updating a case.
Customise 13

How to remove a case type from the dropdown list

  1. Go to the Settings menu and select Remove Case Type.
  2. Select the case type you want gone.
  3. Press the remove button. Your case type list is trimmed from the next entry onwards.
Customise 14

How to remove a stage from the dropdown list

  1. Go to the Settings menu and select Remove Stage.
  2. Select the stage you want to take out.
  3. Press the remove button. The shorter stages list is what you will be offered next time.

A short list is a fast list — keep only the stages you actually record.

Backup & restore

Backup 15

How to take a backup of my case data

A register can be lost or soaked. A backed-up diary cannot. One tap writes three copies.

  1. Open the menu and select Advanced Settings.
  2. Three advanced options are listed there.
  3. Press Create Backup. That is it.

Three copies are produced each time:

  • Phone memory — saved to your handset’s internal memory.
  • SD card / secondary storage — where this lands depends on your handset manufacturer.
  • E-mail — sent to the address in your profile, if the file is under 25 MB and you have internet at the time.

Can’t find the file afterwards? See this FAQ. Make sure your e-mail id is right first — update your profile.

Backup 16

How to restore data from a backup file

For a new phone, or for data you have genuinely lost. Not for everyday use — a restore rebuilds the database from scratch.

  1. Get the backup file — from your backup e-mail, or from the copy already on the device — and put it in your phone’s memory or SD card.
  2. Open the menu, go to Advanced Settings and select Restore Database.
  3. Type your e-mail id to confirm the operation.
  4. Locate the file on the device and tap it. Your database is rebuilt from that file.

Restore clears your existing data and replaces it — it does not merge. Anything entered after that backup was taken will not survive, so take a fresh backup before you restore an old one. See also this FAQ.

Your profile

Profile 17

How to keep my user profile up to date

Your profile holds the details that let us help you — above all the e-mail id we send your backup files to, and use to get your keys back to you if you forget them.

  1. Open the menu and select Settings.
  2. In Settings, choose Update Profile.
  3. Correct the details — check the e-mail id especially.
  4. Press the Update button. Your profile details are saved.

Worth doing before your first backup, not after. See also What if I do not update my profile?
